The Struggle is Real: Navigating Networking as a Shy Creator

As a creative person, I've always known that networking is key to getting my work seen and building a community around it. But for me, and many other shy creators, networking can be a daunting and anxiety-inducing task.

I usually attend networking events as a plus one with someone I’m at least familiar with but I still find myself stood in the corner, nursing my phone, trying to get content in and wondering how I am supposed to make small talk with strangers without looking anxious. I always feel like I am pretending to be someone I'm not.

I've learned to navigate networking in my own way. I've realized that I don't have to be the life of the party or have a million business cards to hand out. I can be myself, even if that means being a little quieter and more observant.

Struggling with Social Anxiety

One of the biggest challenges I face as a shy creator is social anxiety. The thought of walking into a crowded room, introducing myself to strangers, and trying to make meaningful connections can be overwhelming.

But I've learned that social anxiety doesn't have to hold me back. I've developed strategies to manage my anxiety, such as:

  • Preparing ahead of time: I research the event, the attendees, and the venue. I practice my elevator pitch and think about the types of conversations I want to have.

  • Finding a buddy: Having a friend or fellow creator by my side can make a big difference. We can support each other, introduce each other to new people, and provide a sense of comfort in unfamiliar surroundings.

  • Taking breaks: If I'm feeling overwhelmed, I take a step outside, grab a drink, or excuse myself to the restroom. Taking a few deep breaths and collecting my thoughts can help me recharge and come back to the conversation with renewed energy.

Networking on My Own Terms

As a shy creator, I've learned to network on my own terms. I don't try to force myself into situations that make me uncomfortable. Instead, I focus on building meaningful relationships with people who share my interests and values.

I've also learned to leverage online platforms to my advantage. Social media, online communities, and forums have allowed me to connect with other creators and industry professionals in a way that feels more natural and comfortable for me.

By being true to myself, managing my social anxiety, and networking on my own terms, I've been able to build a community around my work and grow as a creative person.

If you're a fellow shy creator, I know it's not always easy to put ourselves out there, but I encourage you to keep going. Find your own way, whether that's through online communities, small group meetings, or one-on-one connections.

Be yourself, be authentic, and the right people will respond.

What are your experiences as a shy creator? How do you navigate networking and social anxiety? Share your thoughts and strategies in the comments below!

Thanks for reading,

xoxo
